I studied painting and printmaking in Birmingham Poly between
1990 and 1993.
This was quite a traditional art education.
For the last 13 years I have worked with marginalized young
people both in London and Swansea.
During this time I studied an MA in the History of Art at
Goldsmiths College and
a Foundation in Existential Psychotherapy. I want to continue
my studies in psychotherapy.
As a child I was curious about the Holocaust and quizzing
my mother about
what had happened to the Jews in the war.
In 1996 I travelled to Poland and visited Auschwitz. From
that experience I began to make paintings.
On my MA I built upon these paintings, experiences and thoughts
through writing and creating art.
I exhibited some of these painting in a solo show in Wales
in 2000 and built my MA dissertation
and essays around the subject. Through my studies I came
to realise that gay men had also been
sent to the concentration camps. I have attempted to paint
my feelings on the treatment of gay men
in the Holocaust and how this relates to gay men today.
But how do you represent that which cannot be represented?
How do you make the invisible, visible?
